As of Monday, May 16, AAA was reporting that the average price per gallon has risen to $4.76 in New York, setting another new record after peaking at $4.52 a week prior, the previous high.
Diesel gas is also on the rise, up to $6.50 as of Sunday, May 15, also a new record in New York.
According to AAA, there is not expected to be any relief for drivers with Memorial Day and the busy summer driving season fast approaching.
“The high cost of oil, the key ingredient in gasoline, is driving these high pump prices for consumers,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said. “Even the annual seasonal demand dip for gasoline during the lull between spring break and Memorial Day, which would normally help lower prices, is having no effect this year.”
Nationally, the average for a gallon of gas is $4.48, which is 40 cents more than a month ago, and $1.43 more than a year ago.
In New York, the price is up 24 cents from a week ago, 57 cents from a month ago, and is up from $3.06 a year ago on May 16, 2021.
In New York, drivers are paying this much on average per gallon of fuel in these counties:
- Rockland: $4.96 (up 26 cents in the past week);
- Westchester: $4.91 (up 19 cents) ;
- Putnam: $4.89 (up 21 cents);
- Dutchess: $4.84 (up 26 cents);
- Nassau: $4.80 (up 25 cents);
- Suffolk: $4.78 (up 23 cents);
- Ulster: $4.75 (26 cents);
- Saratoga: $4.75 (up 26 cents);
- Greene: $4.73 (up 19 cents);
- Orange: $4.73 (up 21 cents);
- Rensselaer: $4.73 (up 23 cents);
- Albany: $4.73 (up 23 cents);
- Sullivan: $4.71 (up 20 cents);
- Schenectady: $4.72 (up 26 cents);
- Columbia: $4.65 (up 19 cents).
